About the Ground Combat Database

[Scroll down to add your name to a list for release notification]

Ground Combat Database - Version 1 (or the GCD-V1) is a copyrighted Microsoft Excel spreadsheet containing a coded large-n dataset of nearly 600 cases of ground combat: 20 from World War II, 25 from the period between WWII and 2003, 423 from 2003-2022, and 125 modern cases analyzed but not coded for various reasons (e.g., inadequate evidence). The database also contains a detailed methodology sheet, data sheets, and code definitions.

GCD-V1 is intended to be used by historians, national security researchers, and military professionals to improve our collective understanding of warfare. It will be released in full under U.S. copyright (with expected Fair Use) in early March 2025, coinciding with the publication of Ground Combat: Puncturing the Myths of Modern War.
